Student Led Conference day

Congratulations to the students in Room 3! You did a fantastic job of sharing your learning with your families. We were really proud of the way that you showed your progress this year, and talked about the work in your folders and around the room. Well done, everyone!

For our art work we made pou whenua, with lots of beautiful faces of Te Ra, the sun. They looked spectacular but had to stay inside because of the strong wind.

Skipping!

We have had lots of lovely, winter weather- cold nights followed by sunny days. This is perfect skipping weather! It is an excellent fitness activity, and really improves the motor skills of the children. Next term we are having Jump Rope for Heart sessions so we'll be pretty good by then.It has been fantastic to watch each child make progress from what they could do before and the amazing skills they have now; including skipping with the long ropes. Gliders!

Welcome back for Term 3!

We are learning about Flight this term and we started last week with a different experiment in each of the 4 Year 2 classrooms, which was pretty exciting! 

Today we made gliders, which are powered by thrust from our arms, which makes them lift up. We tested them outside and found that the wind was a big help! We all used the same pattern and found that some worked differently to others because the folds may have been a little different. We all had very good fun testing our gliders and seeing how far they could go.

Wow! 100 days smarter!

It is hard to believe that we have had 100 days at school so far this year.The children have worked really hard and all made lots of progress. So, it was a great reason to celebrate with dress-ups and activities bases around 100, with a shared lunch to follow. Thank you very much for all of the delicious food that you sent along and a big thank you to Grandma Marie, for her contribution of 3 delicious chocolate cakes in the shapes of 1 0 0. Here are some photos from the parade in the hall this morning. Also, there are some pictures from Onesies day on Wednesday. It was a fun day but I know that the children knew the 2 serious reasons behind it: we live in an earthquake prone area and we need to know what to do if an earthquake happens; and to support the people in Nepal after their disaster. Thank you for the donations. Have a good holiday, and do lots of reading!

We have been for a fantastic trip to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. It was so amazing to see all the natural thermal features in our own area and to see the wide variety of colours, shapes, and formations of the land.
The Lady Knox Geyser was really exciting to watch and the walk around the track showed lots of awesome sights. 
A big thank you to the parents who came with us. Also, a big thank you to Wai-O-Tapu, who charged the children a very small entry fee and all adults were FREE (check out the usual adult entry price!) , so we are very lucky to have a local tourist attraction which sees the importance of being kind to the locals!

Swimming Survival Programme

We have had two enjoyable, exciting sessions at the Aquatic Centre learning lots of different survival skills. This is essential because we live among lakes and rivers and not far from the sea. Also it was fun! Learning to paddle and control kayaks was fabulous! Going in deep water and discovering that you can trust a life jacket to keep you afloat was really exciting. The children did a great job of participating and lots of them really got out  of their comfort zone, so well done! The A.C. staff are excellent, keep the children active and they are very patient.

A very big thank you to the family members who came to help (especially in the water). We could not do it without you.

Our fabulous Maths Challenge at Kuirau Park

Last Thursday we had a great trip to Kuirau Park, with lots of different maths-based activities to do at each of the ten stations.The children had i-pads to scan the Q code, which opened and told them what their task was and how to find the next activity. All the thermal activity was  really interesting and was a great background for following the trail. The children did a great job and really enjoyed it, as well as a play at that fantastic playground!

Fun in Jackson Park

Hello everybody!

We've had a very busy start to our year and all the students have handled the summer heat very well. Thank you for keeping the hats going- with this very hot weather it is essential to have a hat on outside. Water bottles are great too- the children don't have to wait in the queues for the drinking fountains!

One of the exciting activities is going to Jackson Park for developmental P.E. on Friday. Normally, year 2 aren't allowed on Jackson Park so this is very special. They can choose equipment, friends and make up any game that they like and they have a fabulous time! Here are some photos- they are a bit small but might give you some idea.
